Miami wins down the stretch, 92-83
January 31, 2023
The “leader of the pack”, point guard Nigel Pack, led the Canes down the stretch on Tuesday night to beat Virginia Tech 92-83.
“I thought it was a great college basketball game with some outstanding offense on both ends of the court,” said Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga.
“They’re a terrific team, and much like last year, they’re getting healthier and better.”
The game saw 17 lead changes.
“I looked up early in the game and they were 4-for-5 from the three, and I said, ‘Oh my God, I hope that doesn’t continue’,” said Larrañaga.
Isaiah Wong led the Canes with 16 points in the first half as Miami took a 45-44 lead to the break.
In the second half, Pack got red hot, scoring all 17 of his points, including five 3-pointers. With four minutes remaining on the clock, Pack hit two 3-pointers from beyond the arc and a layup during an 8-0 run to break a 76-76 tie.
Miami (17-5, 8-4 ACC) remained undefeated at home this season. The Canes also have not lost consecutive games this season.
Norchad Omier led Miami’s scoring with 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Isaiah Wong added 18 points and contributed five steals. Nigel Pack scored 17 points and Jordan Miller contributed 14 points in the victory.
Miami shot 58.3% (38 of 60) from the floor and 42.1% (8 of 19) from beyond the arc. The key for the Canes was their 22-4 advantage on fast-break points.
Miami goes on the road Saturday to take on #20 Clemson. The Canes trail the Tigers by one game for first place in the ACC.
“It was a good win, everybody was involved,” said Miller. “Coach was happy; we’re happy, but we have a big game ahead against Clemson. They’re #1 in the ACC, so we’re looking to get the W there.”
Tip-off is at 3:00 p.m. ET, with coverage provided on ACCN.
