Miami drops season opener, 9-5
February 17, 2023
The Canes lost their home opener, falling to Penn State, 9-5 before 3,495 fans at Mark Light field.
The loss snapped a string of 14 straight opening day victories dating back to 2007.
Miami (0-1, 0-0 ACC) fell behind 5-0 in the second inning as Canes’ starter Gage Ziehl allowed five runs in two innings in his first career start as a Cane. Ziehl (0-1) gave up nine hits and walked one with two strikeouts. He was pulled in the third inning without getting an out.
The Nittany Lions pounded Miami pitching all night collecting 16 hits to only six hits for the Canes.
“We didn’t get it done pitching-wise,” said head coach Gino DiMare.
Miami did attempt to comeback as Ian Farrow, Zach Levenson and Dominic Pitelli each hit home runs for Miami. The Canes closed the gap to 6-2, but Penn State sealed the game in the eight inning with three runs.
“Overall, just a not a good game,” said DiMare. “A little humbling, certainly. It’s not the way we wanted to come out.”
Miami and Penn State play the second of a three-game series on Saturday (7:00 p.m., ACCNX).
