

Duke routs Miami, 45-21

Despite a brief third quarter rally, Miami (3-4, 1-2 ACC) could not dig out from under eight turnovers in a 45-21 lost to Duke (5-3, 2-2 ACC) at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.
Miami got out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter after recovering a Duke fumble on the first series. QB Tyler Van Dyke hit WR Colbie Young for a 7-yard touchdown. The quarter ended and the turnovers started. Late in the second quarter Van Dyke was knocked out of the game. Jake Garcia relieved Van Dyke and went 13 for 21 for 198 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Van Dyke finished 11 for 16 for 81 yards and a score before he exited.
At the half, Duke led 17-7.
The Canes came out with renewed energy in the third quarter with 14 unanswered points to take a 21-17. But Miami’s lead didn’t last long, as Duke answered with 28 unanswered points to finish the rout.
Miami’s eight turnovers (3 interception & 4 fumbles) were the most by any team in a Power 5 conference game since 2009.
Duke quarterback Riley Leonard kept Miami’s defense off-balance all day. He ran for three touchdowns and threw for another.
Duke out-gained Miami, 336-327. But Duke scored 24 points off of the turnovers.
Miami will now be challenged to attain bowl-eligible. They must go 3-2 to gain eligibility. Down the stretch, the Canes must go 3-2 to gain eligibility, including games with FSU and Clemson.
Miami next travels to Virginia on Oct. 29.
