Canes fall on walk-off homer
May 27, 2021

In the first round of the ACC Baseball Tournament, Miami to Duke, 3-2, on a walk-off home run on Thursday.

Miami’s All-ACC closer Carson Palmquist gave up a rare lead in the ninth inning when Duke’s Michael Rothenberg blasted the game winning homer with one out to break up a 2-2 tie. Rothenberg tied the game up earlier with a two-run single in the seventh inning.

Miami could manage only six hits, leaving 11 stranded runners. The Canes had runners on base in the last three innings, but could not bring them home. Lost opportunities.

"We did the same thing at Louisville…,” said head coach Gino DeMare.”… left guys on base, we didn't capitalize, we didn't get insurance runs. You can't expect our bullpen to be perfect every game and that was the case today.”

The victory for the Blue Devils was their 10th straight win after beating FSU and Miami this week. Fourth-seeded Miami (32-18) will not advance in the tournament.  They take on fifth-seeded Florida State (29-22) on Friday (3:00 p.m., BSFL) in their second game in pool play.

GO Canes!
