BOOM! Canes WIN! Take Series!
April 9, 2022

There was thunder again in Miami on Saturday night.

It was the sound of three home runs by the Canes as they defeated Virginia, 5-4, before a sellout crowd at Rodriguez Park on Mark Light Field.

With the score tied at 4-4 in the seventh inning, Miami’s Yohandy Morales crushed a solo home run to give the Canes the lead and eventual win. It was the Canes’ twelfth straight victory and secured the series win for Miami (25-6, 11-2 ACC). Morales’ blast was his seventh home run of the season and traveled an estimated 429 feet.

Miami outfielder
Jacob Burke gave the Canes an early 2-0 lead when he homered in the third inning. However, UVA roared back, putting five straight hitters on base to start the fourth inning. The Cavs proceeded to score four runs to take a 4-2 lead off Miami freshman starter Karson Ligon. Until that inning, Ligon had retired nine straight Cavaliers.

The Canes were not done with their bats. In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Zach Levenson blasted a solo homer to close the gap to 4-3.

Then it happened in the sixth inning. Levenson singled with one out.
Gaby Gutierrez walked. With the tying run in scoring position, UVA freshman righty Jay Woolfolk threw a wild pitch to score Levenson and tie the game 4-4.

Once again, Miami’s bullpen took over, with
JP Gates and Ronaldo Gallo shutting down the Cavs in the seventh inning, setting up Morales’ game winning heroics in the bottom of the inning.

Gallo and closer
Andrew Walters then slammed the door on Virginia (26-5, 9-5 ACC) over the final two innings to secure the win and the series. It was Walters’ ACC-leading 10th save.

Miami goes for their third straight series sweep on Sunday. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
